If my memory serves me well, my wish of going to sea began at the first meeting at the age of 10 with my "Uncle Bent", a nephew, who at that time was sailing as A.B.Seaman. Since then I just wanted to finish school as soon as possible so that I could get to sea, but even so, I signed on for a additional year to learn the ground rules of the English language which I knew, would come in very handy later on due to the fact that English is THE language at sea.
So finally !!! on the 27th of April 1957 at the age of fifteen and a half, I went to sea and with a few short stops in between I continued sailing until, finally after searching for more than 20 years , I found the woman with whom I wanted to marry, that was in Rotterdam in Holland.
Consequently (it was my own decission) I went ashore for good, and at the same time I had the good fortune of finding a job after only a few months.
It was as a Representative for a Ship Chandler firm also in Rotterdam, and it was evidently the right job for me, because I held on to it for almost 23 years, but that is a completely different story.
