Due to lack of money I had to take the first job available, and that I did even though it was in the Engine Room, which wasn't my cup-of-tea, as a Motorman. I signed on the 6th of September 1960 in Antwerp, and worked as a Motorman, until the opportunity arose to move back up onto the deck as Ordinary Seaman and later as an A.B. Seaman; as which I signed off in Rotterdam the first of August 1961.
With the "Mc-Kinney Mærsk" (Tankship, 18.000 tdw.), we went from Rotterdam through the
Suez Canal and the Red Sea <http://www.unep.ch/seas/main/persga/red.html>to Djibouti <http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/dj.html> with cargo. After discharging we sailed to Singapore <http://www.mpa.gov.sg> to load part cargo, and to Pulau Sambuh in Indonesia to top off the cargo of Wax; the wax had to be kept heated to a constant temperature of at least 38 centigrades above zero. In the tropics that wasn't a problem but when we came to Northern Europe it was freezing, and when we arrived in Rotterdam the outside-temperature was 8 centigrades below zero. But we managed to keep the cargo in a fluid state.
With that same ship we also visited a.o. Puerta La Miranda in the Bay of Maracaibo <http://www.maracaibo.org> in Venezuela, Curaçao <http://www.curports.com>, Aruba <http://www.aruba.com> and Trinidad <http://www.visittnt.com/ > in the Caribean Sea. We sailed in ballast over the Atlantic to Palermo <http://www.autport.pa.it> on the Italian island of Sicily where we stayed in dry-dock for approx. three weeks, then again through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea over the Arabian Sea <http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/islands_oceans_poles/dhow_76.jpg > and through the Strait of Hormuz <http://www.dataxinfo.com/hormuz/strait.htm> to the Persian Gulf <http://i-cias.com/e.o/pers_glf.htm > (Mina-Al- Ahmadi in Kuwait <http://www.kuwait-info.org>) to load for Japan, if I remember correctly we discharged the cargo in Shimonoseki <http://www.shimonoseki-port.com/e>.
From Japan we went to Singapore for a cargo for Rotterdam. When precisely I don't know anymore but we were also once in Valetta <http://www.cyberpomo.com/fotoalbum/cruise/valetta>on the island of Malta for repairs in the engine-room.
Finally having reached Rotterdam I signed off.
